Poinsett Bridge, South Carolina

Built in 1820, Poinsett Bridge is the oldest surviving bridge in South Carolina, & possibly all of the southeast.

Locals claim it’s haunted – with tales of swirling of unexplained lights & screams surrounding the stone structure.  Others claim they’ve been unable to start their cars when they go to leave.

To be honest, I did find the area VERY eerie, though no tangible ghost-like occurrence happened.  It was simply the feeling in the air that rested on me somewhat uncomfortably.  The lush green countryside definitely palpitated a certain playful yet slightly unsettling mystery.

But if a little possible paranormal activity doesn’t bother you, it really is a marvelous Gothic-style architectural marvel definitely worthy of a visit.

It is believed to have been designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument in Washington  D.C. (see my pictures of the Washington Monument here)

Like Campbell’s Covered bridge nearby, it also is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten path for this one.  Plus you’ll drive some fun country roads to get there 🙂
