Featured in scenes of Last of the Mochicans, Hickory Nut Falls cascades down 404 feet of sheer rock face.
If you’re all about chasing the waterfalls of WNC (western North Carolina) – consider adding this one to your list.
What: Hickory Nut Falls – waterfall hike
Where: Chimney Rock State Park ($12 admission fee), Chimney Rock, North Carolina
Length: 1.5 mile out-and-back – it’s an easy woodland hike to the base of a viewing platform – you’re up close & personal with the falls (no swimming though)
Time: allow up to 1 hour
You won’t see this view on the hike – but here’s a shot of Hickory Nut Falls in the distance as the sun sets:
To get your admission fee’s worth also consider the Skyline Trail hike – that takes you to the TOP of Hickory Nut Falls (& offers beautiful sweeping views):
This waterfall certainly isn’t off the beaten path or secluded like so many of the special less-visited waterfalls of this region of the southeast– but that doesn’t mean it should be missed.
I recommend this hike more for families, beginner hikers, or those who simply don’t want to hike long or hard to view a beautiful waterfall! (Or for those like me who are obsessed with visiting as many waterfalls as possible!)
And because it’s so easily accessible as part of a popular state park, expect crowds!
